A good way to start the year

1ST PLACE.....4 times!

We attending the Idaho Classic Dance Competition in Pocatello last week with Kailey with her dance team and came home with 4 first place trophies!! The girls danced well. Their routines looked clean and sharp, the music was fantastic, as always, and us parents couldn't be more proud.

This is the beginning of the competition season and I can't think of a better way to start the year!

A new and improved year...

In looking back over the past year, there are many things I enjoyed, learned from, wish I could do again, and some things that I wouldn't want to repeat. For the record, here are some of the highlights:
  • Going to Pocatello to watch Kailey's first competition with the Blue Angels dance team.
  • Attending the "Women at the Well" production with my friends at church.
  • Watching Caden place in the top 5 in the jump rope contest at Lake Ridge.
  • Feeding the Blue Angels breakfast and lunch during competition weeks.
  • Attending Joshua Radin's concert at the Knitting Factory with our friends Nate & Serena.
  • Building pinewood derby cars with our boys and taking them to the races.
  • Spending hours during lunch talking with my great friend, Janice.
  • Listening to Parker sing in Spanish at his school music program.
  • Going to San Francisco with my family, riding BART into the city and touring around.
  • Taking Love and Logic classes to be a better parent.
  • Watching my husband teach our boys self defense and fighting techniques in Karate.
  • Breathing with Caden as he ran the 400 meter race for the first time.
  • Clapping hard for Caden when he received his Arrow of Light award in Scouts.
  • Going with Kailey to get her braces taken off and taking pictures of her straight teeth.
  • Jammin' on the piano while Caden strummed his guitar, creating new music together.
  • Visiting with the Chandler family when Wendy came to visit from California.
  • Traveling to Utah and playing baseball in the mountains with Erica and Jefferson.
  • Stressing while Kailey learned to drive - then mastered the skills and got her license.
  • Spending the best 5 days this year with my husband in San Diego for our 25th wedding anniversary. It was so good, we are going back in 2012 with our whole family.
  • Eating dinner at a garden bistro in Boise and listening to Wayne White play the guitar.
  • Attending the John family reunion and swimming at the hotel with Erica and Jefferson.
  • Knowing my boys are spending quality time with grandpa out on the golf course.
  • Helping Parker decide what he wants to do with his life & settling on playing the drums.
  • Spending the night in Cascade for the Women's Getaway with all my friends from church.
  • Helping Kailey buy a dress for Homecoming dates - her first date!
  • Watching the BSU Broncos and Kellen Moore every time they played a game.
  • Having skin lesions removed and hearing they were not cancerous.
  • Watching Caden learn how to kick the soccer ball off the wall with his indoor soccer team.
  • Getting a text from Erica saying she was pregnant and due in May!
  • Spending hours with my mom, running errands and shopping. We laugh at the silliest things.
  • Beginning the school year as PTA President for New Horizons - and having a ball!
  • Listening to Kyle play his music on my piano and staying to visit and eat lunch with us.
  • Taking my boys to their music lessons and watching future musicians in action.
  • Teaching in church twice a month and sharing my testimony of Christ with my friends.
  • Publishing my second novel, Finding Kate and doing book signings at book stores.
  • Watching Breaking Dawn with my girls in the movie theater and passing tissues to Erica.
  • Admiring my husband as he presents a life-changing weight loss idea to those who need it.
  • Getting my carpets cleaned and having a clean house.
  • Getting a massage to work out the knots that all this other stuff causes.
  • Watching my brother dote on his new dog like only a loving parent can.
  • Eating all the yummy desserts Brooke makes for our family and watching my waist expand.
  • Having Erica and Jefferson at home for Thanksgiving and celebrating with fondue.
  • Creating the Penguin Patch store for the students at New Horizons for Christmas.
  • Attending wedding receptions, visiting with people I care about & haven't seen in a while.
  • Serving at the homeless shelter and sharing my testimony with a woman who's interested.
  • Being with Kailey as she receives her patriarchal blessing.
  • Talking with my close friend in Sacramento each month and wishing we were together.
  • Listening proudly to Caden give his memorized talk in the primary program at Church.
  • Being asked to sing a solo in a big production for church, and being able to be a part of such an awesome opportunity.
Ya know, life is made of a lot of little significant things that pass too quickly. They contribute to who we become. My family is a big priority in my life and I treasure each moment with them.

The biggest highlight of this year is that I got to do all these things with my husband right next to me. He is my biggest support, my rock, and the reason I can be who I am. He works hard for our family and I know I take him for granted, but I love him with all of my heart.

Thank you, honey, for being the husband you promised you would be when you asked me to marry you 25 years ago. I'm forever yours.

New Pictures for a New Year

PICTURE DAY!

The light was perfect.
The boys were gone.
And we had the time.

She's very photogenic and I'm a practicing photographer,
so Kailey and I went out to "shoot" the breeze...Kailey style.

We had a great time!

Christmas Expressions!

It's all he's ever wanted...
now he's got one.

A CELL PHONE.

Even with all the rules
it came with, Caden is
a happy boy.

It doesn't take much
to please Parker....

just get him a box
of Beanes.

Now he has a large
collection of them
thanks to grandma
and grandpa.

Kailey's even easier to please.

Just give her money!

...and then take her shopping
on the day after Christmas to
get in on all the sweet deals.

She used her money well!

Be Grateful!

We have a cat with no name,
but lately I've been calling her Baby.

She was a cute little kitten when we got her - so adorable and fun. She didn't like our dog, Lucy, so she'd run to us to get away.

Now she's a year and a half and since she's grown up with our dog as her mentor, she often exhibits dog behavior. Such as: tapping on the window to go outside, running to the door when the doorbell rings, and now she sits on the bar stool to watch us make food in the kitchen while Lucy is at our feet, waiting for something to drop.

Here is a picture of her "posing" for the camera. Maybe she learned that from Kailey?! We are grateful for the animal members of our family.

Speaking of members of our family....
We miss these two so much.

We are grateful for the holidays,
which give us an excuse to take a
break and allow us to be together!

We spent a relaxing weekend visiting,
playing games, watching Caden play
soccer, and eating good food.

This is our annual family picture.
These together moments
are so precious that we must
document them when they
happen.

Life is fragile.

We are grateful for every
day we can be together.

Caden is our family funny bone.
It used to be Erica but now she's
Jefferson's funny bone.

He's learning to play the
clarinet this year so he can
play the electric guitar next year.
(Pre-requisite to Jazz band).

He's learning how to play power
chords in rock songs on his
electric guitar - like Crazy Train.
It's really fun to hear him play
a recognizable and famous song.

We are grateful for our talents.

We are also grateful
we can learn new skills.

This is Parker working
on tying his tie.

Perfection takes lots and
lots of practice.

Fortunately, he's young
and will have many years
to practice before he goes
on his mission!

Happy Halloween

I know, I'm late. I have a new resolution for 2012---to blog more.
If for no other reason, to document our lives passing quickly by.

I guess we've been enjoying life so much that
I haven't taken the time to write it all down.

Here's a brief recap:

This is the pumpkin that Parker
designed and mom cut out.

This is Caden trying to win the pie
eating contest --- uh, something is
missing....

Oh yeah, the pie!

We could more accurately call this
the whip cream slurping contest.

This is Parker slurping
ever so neatly.

Neither one of the boys "won"
the slurping contest, but
it was sure entertaining
to watch and they made
me proud for doing it
so carefully.
